History of Arby’s Beef and Cheddar with Arby’s Red Sauce.

Arby’s began in Boardman, Ohio on July 23, 1964 by two brothers: Forrest, and Leroy Raffel. The dynamic brotherly duo were owners of a restaurant supply business who believed there was room in the market for a fast food franchise based on something other than hamburgers. The Raffel brothers would settle on roast beef as their champion menu item, and then came up with the name Arby’s. The name came from initials, R.B, which stood for the Raffel brothers, though it’s commonly mistaken for Roast Beef. The original Arby’s locations were more luxurious in appearance than your typical fast food joint, offering roast beef sandwiches for $.69 cents compared to the average burger’s $.15 price. It wouldn’t be until the 1970s that Arby’s really took off, taking a pace of 50 stores opening per year.

You may be interested to know that the Arby’s Beef and Cheddar with that signature Arby’s red sauce wasn’t initially part of the menu. In fact, it wouldn’t be until 1978 that the idea even came into existence. Yes, in 78, a crack team of Arby’s finest franchisees and operations specialists came together to work on an experimental R&D project with a simple mission: take the already perfect Arby’s Roast Beef Sandwich and create a sister sandwich that was just as perfect and delicious. It took months of experimentation before they came up with the answer. Yes, it took a panel of people to come up with that classic thinly sliced roast beef sandwich that was topped with warm melted cheddar cheese and then flavored with zesty, red ranch sauce served up on a warm onion roll.

It wasn’t just the Beef and cheddar or Arby's red sauce that they came up with. This was also the time period they introduced Jamocha Shakes, chicken sandwiches, curly fries, and both the aforementioned Arby’s sauce, and horsey sauce. Arby’s would go on to have a turbulent future from the 80s onwards, but they still remain a fast food classic to this day.
