Moreover, in Russian, "biscuit" means something like a sponge cake, and there is a completely different word for crunchy cookies, which literally means "baking" 👩🍳

Do you ever think about where words come from? 🌏 There are so many words in English that we borrow from French...like that feeling of familiarity, when we experience a moment in time that we’re convinced we have ‘already seen’, is usually described as ‘déjà vu’.The word "biscuit" has an interesting etymology. It originated from the Latin term "bis coctus," which means "twice-baked." In ancient Rome, biscuits were made by baking bread dough twice to remove moisture and achieve a longer shelf life. The Italian word "biscotti" refers to a specific type of cookie or biscuit that is baked twice and are typically dry, crunchy, and often flavoured with almonds or other ingredients.Over time, the term "biscuit" evolved to refer to various baked goods in different regions. In British and Australian English, "biscuit" typically refers to a baked, crispy, and sweet treat that is often enjoyed with tea. (What about in NZ Hannah Lawrence?)In American English, however, "biscuit" commonly refers to a soft, bread-like baked good, similar to a scone.Making sure you tell your translator which variant of English you need your text translated into is super important. There are often words that need to be adapted or localised that can make a big difference to the final translation and final users.#English #xl8 #communication

SPEAK & WRITE JAMAICANI like the British but they lied to us when they defined what we speak as patois back in the slavery days when we couldn’t read or write. Because patois is a French word so it just cannot be used to define us, when what we actually speak is the Jamaican language, noh mek nohbadih fule yuh!EXAMPLE:The French got the French language, Germany got the German language, Italy got the Italian language. Therefore what we have is the Jamaican language and I hope I have made this crystal clear to you all, once and for all times sake. There’s no ifs or buts about it the Jamaican language is real like it or not.So I’d ask the government of Jamaica to pave the way for our Jamaican language.IN JAMAICA:There are three different things going on and it has always been. So let me break it down to you. How do you say: (I am going to Jamaica) in Jamaican and patois?1. English: I am going to Jamaica 2. Jamaican: Mih agaw Jamaica 3. Patois: Mi a guh a Jamaica Above you can see the clear differences between English, Jamaican and Patois. Here’s another catch, the Englishman had no idea that time would catch upon him as demonstrated here. They had no idea that God/ JAH would send one great, great man to bring to light the truth about what we are.We are Jamaicans and what we speak is Jamaican and that’s final. The book, “Speak & Write Jamaican” is so interesting it’s available at all major and minor online bookstores.Watch 8 video lessons free online @ speakandwritejamaican.com

#tipoftheday #quicktips #Englishtips📌 German expressions don't always make sense when translated directly.💡 Native English speakers do NOT say "four-eyes principle".😲 The word "four-eyes" is actually an impolite name for someone who wears glasses! 👓 👍 Like my quick tips? I usually give my daughters a reading challenge over the summer. This year one was reading Harry Potter in English. To challenge myself I decided to read Harry Potter in French and also sign up on HelloTalk to improve my spoken French as well as helping others learn Swedish. So much fun! 🥳🤔Which languages do you speak, and which ones would you like to learn? Fun facts for Potterheads:The French translator chose to translate many of the names in the book, much more than the Swedish translator. For example Hogwarts is Poudlard, Tom Marvolo Riddle is Tom Elvis Jedusor (because of a very important reason, if you’re good with anagrams you may be able to guess why!) and Slytherin is called Serpentard. #reading #translation #languages

IN JAMAICA TODAYThere are three different ways to communicate for example: we have 2 languages and a dialect So let me break it down to you gently. EXAMPLE:How do you say: (I am going to Jamaica) in both Jamaican and patois?1. English: I am going to Jamaica 2. Jamaican: Mih agaw Jamaica 3. Patois: Mi a guh a Jamaica Above you can see clearly the clear differences between Jamaican, English and Patois.500 years ago the British had no idea that time would catch upon them, when they used a French word patois to describe what we speak. They had no idea that God/ JAH would send one “little but wih Tallawah” man to bring to light the truth about what and who we are.We are Jamaicans and what we speak on our Island is Jamaican, English and patois a French word meaning dialect.“Speak & Write Jamaican” is the only book that teaches you Jamaican, English and patois all in one book. Coffee time! Latte for me please. Now when I ask for a coffee I have so many choices. What type of coffee? what kind of milk? Do I want an extra flavour? How hot do I want it? Well the same can be said about translation. It can be confusing especially when budgets are under constant pressure. Whats right for the content I need translating? #coffee #translation #language #rws
