Do you ever think about where words come from? 🌏 There are so many words in English that we borrow from French...like that feeling of familiarity, when we experience a moment in time that we’re convinced we have ‘already seen’, is usually described as ‘déjà vu’.The word "biscuit" has an interesting etymology. It originated from the Latin term "bis coctus," which means "twice-baked." In ancient Rome, biscuits were made by baking bread dough twice to remove moisture and achieve a longer shelf life.The Italian word "biscotti" refers to a specific type of cookie or biscuit that is baked twice and are typically dry, crunchy, and often flavoured with almonds or other ingredients.Over time, the term "biscuit" evolved to refer to various baked goods in different regions. In British and Australian English, "biscuit" typically refers to a baked, crispy, and sweet treat that is often enjoyed with tea. (What about in NZ Hannah Lawrence?)In American English, however, "biscuit" commonly refers to a soft, bread-like baked good, similar to a scone.Making sure you tell your translator which variant of English you need your text translated into is super important. I usually give my daughters a reading challenge over the summer. This year one was reading Harry Potter in English. To challenge myself I decided to read Harry Potter in French and also sign up on HelloTalk to improve my spoken French as well as helping others learn Swedish. So much fun! 🥳🤔Which languages do you speak, and which ones would you like to learn? Fun facts for Potterheads:The French translator chose to translate many of the names in the book, much more than the Swedish translator. For example Hogwarts is Poudlard, Tom Marvolo Riddle is Tom Elvis Jedusor (because of a very important reason, if you’re good with anagrams you may be able to guess why!) and Slytherin is called Serpentard. #reading #translation #languages
