The Chateauesque home displays a general sense of verticality and substance, with masonry walls broken by tall windows. A Chateau floor plan is made for entertaining. Formal rooms are large and elaborate, while private living areas (though equally luxurious), will be isolated from the public spaces.

Popularized in America between 1880 and 1910 by architect Richard Morris Hunt, massive Chateauesque house plans feature steeply pitched hipped roofs, sometimes highlighted by cast-iron cresting, wall or roof dormers, spires, corner turrets, and tall chimneys crowned with an ornamental caps.

In France, the terms château or manoir are often used synonymously to describe a French manor house; maison-forte is the appellation for a strongly fortified house, which may include two sets of enclosing walls, drawbridges, and a ground-floor hall or salle basse that was used to receive peasants and commoners.

Often, these walls sloped away at the base to redirect objects dropped from the top of the castle wall, ricocheting them out at soldiers on the ground. Because they had walls to protect them, castle defenders would sometimes hunker down and try to wait out their attackers.

Castles are usually built on high ground with clear views of the surrounding lands – and both of these things make them difficult to attack. Prudhoe was built on a hill top ridge with an 18m drop on the north side and a deep ravine on the south side.
