You’ve got your sights set on Scizor—and why wouldn’t you? Whether you’re trying to fill out your Pokédex or flesh out your team, this iconic Bug/Steel Pokémon offers plenty of variety to your lineup. We’ll take a closer look at how to get your hands on Scizor in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and how to get Kleavor, Scyther’s other evolution, in Pokémon Arceus. We’ll even dive deeper into some older Pokémon titles so that you can evolve (and, at times, mega-evolve) your Scyther there, too.

Things You Should Know

  • Evolve Scyther into Scizor in Pokémon Scarlet/Violet by giving it a Metal Coat as a held item and trading the Pokémon with a friend.
  • In Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, Scyther can be found in South Province Areas Four and Six, Casseroya Lake, and North Province Area Two.
  • Evolve Scyther into Kleavor in Pokémon Arceus by giving it the Black Augurite item. You can dig up this item with an Ursuluna Pokémon, or win it after beating/catching Graveler.

Evolving into Scizor

  1. 1

Buy a Metal Coat from Delibird Presents in Levincia. Head over to Levinicia, the town with the Electric Gym. Make your way over to the northern portion of this area, where you’ll pass the Delibird Presents store. There, purchase the Metal Coat item for 3,000 Pokédollars.[1]

    • If you’re feeling lucky, you might be able to buy a Metal Coat from the Porto Marinada Auction House. Still, visiting Delibird Presents is the most reliable and consistent way to get this item.
  2. 2

Give the Metal Coat to your Scyther as a held item. Go into the “Other Items” section of your inventory, scroll to Metal Coat, and select the “Give to a Pokémon” option. Then, select Scyther from your Pokémon party to hand him the item.[2]

  3. 3

Trade your Scyther with a friend. Hit up a friend who also owns Pokémon Scarlet or Violet and head into the Poké Portal section of your game. Using the “Link Trade” feature, trade your Scyther (now holding Metal Coat) over to your friend. Wait for Scyther to evolve into Scizor, and then ask your friend to trade it back.[3]

    • Don’t have a friend who owns the game? Using the “Link Trade” feature, some crafty traders have created private trades with the code set to 02600260 (with extra zeros added to complete the 8-digit number). Only trainers aiming to evolve their Scythers will use this code, so both you and the random other person can walk away from the trade with a new Scizor.[4]

How do you evolve Scyther without trading?

  1. Obtain Scizor in a 5- or 6-star Tera Raid Battle. Unfortunately, Scyther can only be evolved by trading with a friend—but there are other ways to catch Scizor. As you continue on your journey in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, seek out any light pillars you find near your location, as these commence a Tera Raid Battle. Some 5- or 6-star battles feature Scizor, allowing you to catch him directly.[5]

    • You might also find Scizor in 4-star raid battles.[6]
    • This method requires a bit of patience and persistence. There are many Pokémon who can appear in a 5- or 6-star raid battle, so it may take some time before you encounter Scizor.

Section 3 of 6:

Scyther Location

Download Article

  1. Find Scyther near Casseroya Lake in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The game’s official Pokédex notes that Scyther “lives in bamboo groves.”[7] With this in mind, Casseroya Lake is a popular hangout for Scyther, as well as North Province Area Two and South Province Areas Four and Six.[8]

    • Scyther can also pop up in Wild Spawn Biomes, specifically in the forested and grassy areas.

Section 4 of 6:

Evolving into Kleavor (Pokémon Arceus)

  1. 1

Obtain Black Augurite by fighting a Graveler. Wander around the Hisui region until you stumble across a Graveler—the Crimson Mirelands are a great place to start. Beat the Graveler (or catch it) to gain Black Augurite.[9]

    • You can also dig up Black Augurite while riding an Ursaluna (especially if you’re near the cliffs), but battling Graveler is the most consistent way to get it.
  2. 2

Give the Black Augurite to your Scyther. Unlike Scizor’s evolution path, Scyther doesn’t need to be traded to evolve into Kleavor. As soon as you give Black Augurite to your Pokémon, it will evolve directly into Kleavor, a Bug/Rock-type Pokémon.[10]

Evolution in Other Pokémon Games

  1. Scyther evolves into Scizor in every Pokémon game when it’s traded with a Metal Coat. Whether you’re playing a classic like Pokémon Gold or a 2000s game like Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum, Scyther’s evolution process remains the same—it needs to be traded while holding a Metal Coat.[11] If you're on the hunt for a Metal Coat in an older game, there’s a 2-5% chance of certain Steel-type Pokémon holding this item when you catch them, like:

    • Magnemite, Magneton, and Magnezone
    • Bronzor and Bronzong
    • Metang and Metagross
    • Skarmony
    • Beldum[12]

Section 6 of 6:

Mega-Evolving Scyther

Download Article

  1. 1

Mega-evolve Scizor with Scizorite in several 3DS Pokémon games. Popular 3DS franchises like Pokémon X/Y, Pokémon Omega Red/Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon Sun/Moon, and Pokémon Ultra Sun/Moon let you mega evolve by giving him Scizorite, a special item. Here’s a closer look at how to get it:

    • Pokémon X/Y: At one of the lower floors in the Frost Cavern (behind Abomasnow)[13]
    • Pokémon OR/AS: In the Petalburg Woods, eastwards past the prickly tree[14]
    • Pokémon Sun/Moon and US/UM: At the Battle Tree[15]
  2. 2

Mega-evolve Scizor with Scizor Mega Energy in Pokémon Go. Collect Scizor Mega Energy by participating in a lot of Scizor raids. Once you’ve mega-evolved Scizor at least once in your Pokémon Go game, set the Pokémon as your walking buddy to passively gain Scizor Mega Energy.[16]

    • Keep in mind that only one Pokémon can be mega-evolved on your Pokémon team at one time.

Go to the Pokémon's summary, and there should be a section that tells you what that Pokémon is holding. Also, you can tell if your Pokémon is holding an item if you go to your Pokemon's party, and there should be an icon next to the Pokémon's sprite.

    Community Answer

(Partial spoilers ahead.) Yes, after you get to the Battle Tree on Poni Island after defeating either Red or Blue, you should start fighting in the Battle Tree. After a while, you should get enough Battle Points (BP) to be able to afford a Mega Stone. You get the Key Stone and Alakazite from Dexio after you beat the main story.

To evolve Scyther, start by getting a Metal Coat, which you can find at specific locations or with certain wild Pokémon depending on the game you're playing. Then, give your Scyther the Metal Coat to hold onto. When you're ready to evolve your Scyther, you'll need to trade it with a friend since Scyther's evolution is only triggered when it's traded. Easy peasy - you just need to catch yourself a Scyther, which isn't too hard if you know where to look, and then grab a Metal Coat. Here's the kicker, though: Instead of trading, you gotta use that Metal Coat on your Scyther. Just give it as a held item and voila, it evolves into Scizor.
