I’m excited to introduce you to my first guest blogger at Our Crafty co*cktails. Please say hello to Anne!

Anne loves exploring the never ending world of wine and co*cktails.

She has been dipping her toes deeper and deeper into wine studies and is now writing about everything alcohol at Aspiring Winos.

Her favorite beverage is champagne, yes, the real kind, and she loves figure skating, even if it’s harder now that she’s not 20!

If you’re feeling a little blue, being cooped up in your house as current events change quickly and dramatically, you might be leaning towards a mid-afternoon co*cktail.

A bit of an at-home happy hour, easing what is rather a challenging time for a lot of people who are now working from home, their kids released from school, while enduring the drumbeat of hard news.

Well, let this lovely Jameson Irish Whiskey in Milk ease your day. It’s great for any time of year, but also a classic St. Patrick’s day co*cktail.

Whiskey is one of my favorite spirits. Though there’s some variation among kinds of whiskeys—the peaty smokiness of scotch, the smooth vanilla notes of bourbon—a good whiskey is smooth and offers a complete experience, from taste buds to scent receptors.

You can drink them alone or mix whiskeys with any number of things: lemon juice and maple syrup for a little whiskey sour, or make a classic combination with cola, hot coffee, you name it.

Irish whiskey has a lot of flavor flexibility, and today we’re going to mix it with milk and some yummy spices for a delicious little drink.

Jameson features a blend of whiskeys which is then triple-distilled before being aged in oak for four years.

Oak gives whiskey a particular vanillin note; it’s got depth and heft, kind of like what you find in a good oak-aged chardonnay.

Like most whiskeys, it’s got a bit of a kick as well.

History of Jameson Irish Whiskey

Though Jameson Irish Whiskey is owned by an enormous beverage conglomerate now (the Pernod company from France), its roots are deep in Irish soil.

John Jameson founded his first distillery in the capital of Ireland, Dublin, in 1780.

The family held the company for over a century, growing into one of the most powerful distilleries in the area. It’s currently the third-largest distillery in the world.

You can visit one of the older distilleries in Jameson’s history as a Dublin tourist—it offers tastings, too! Jameson is an easy to find whiskey, routinely offered in most North American liquor stores.

Each bottle contains the family’s original motto, “Sine Metu.” This Latin phrase translates to “Without Fear;” the Jameson website says that’s how they’ve made whiskey so long and under some really hard circ*mstances (war! prohibition! more war!) but I suspect with enough of it, some imbibers have likely felt that motto a little strongly.

Imbibe with caution, folks. A little healthy fear goes a long way. Our co*cktail is also made with Bailey’s Irish cream. Bailey’s is one of the great desserts among liquors. Sweet, lush, it’s just heaven.

It’s usually used as a part of a mix, a compliment to other liquors. Bailey’s contains Irish whiskey and cream—dairy cream, though they now make almond varietals.

It was born in the 1970s, a delectable, sweet concoction with a little vanilla, a little chocolate, and a lot of deliciousness, the first Irish cream ever produced.

We keep a small bottle on hand at all times—it’s great in coffee, poured on ice cream, to make boozy Dalgona coffee, or—as you’ll soon learn!—blended with other things.

In any case, if you’re feeling the luck of the Irish or just hoping to channel some your way—and who isn’t?—this is going to be just the drink for you.

It’d make a great nightcap, or would be a good dessert drink at the end of a meal. Or, if you’d like it, perfect on a Sunday afternoon while streaming your favorite shows.

How to Make a Jameson Irish Whiskey Milk co*cktail

So let’s get to it. Here’s what you need for four servings.

  • 2 cups whole milk (you could use lighter milks, but the higher the fat content, the richer this will be)
  • ½ cup Jameson Irish Whiskey
  • ½ cup Bailey’s Irish Cream
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon

Most of this stuff you probably have already in your house, but if you need to run to the store, we’ll wait.

Back already? Here we go.

First, get a small saucepan. In it, pour the milk and the whiskeys. Put the pan on low heat. Add the honey, ginger and cinnamon.

Whisk continuously so nothing scorches until everything is nicely melded. You’re looking, essentially, for the honey to melt and spread throughout.

This process shouldn’t take but a few minutes. You want to fill four old fashioned glasses (those which are short and a bit wide, like a halved pint glass) with ice cubes.

Pour your warm blend over the ice and literally put a cherry on top if you’ve got one—a little maraschino would be just the thing.

Make A Larger Serving

You could also scale this drink up or down; you’d have to be careful watching the pan if you scaled to a single serving or two—make sure you’ve got a really small pan or, if you’ve got a bigger one, expect it to warm in moments.

You don’t want to accidentally boil the booze out of it, after all. Scaling up, it would make a nice drink for winter holiday parties or other gatherings.

Then you’d just need a bigger pot and a lot more milk.

I bet this combination would also be quite lovely warm, without the ice, on a cold March day.

Each drink contains just over a shot of Jameson (a shot is 1.5 ounces and each would get 2 ounces here) and just over a shot of Bailey’s, so it has a nice little punch to it that’ll have you warmed up inside, ice cubes or not, in short order.

Taking a little time for yourself—with a book, a cup of tea, or a little Jameson and milk—can help you persevere for the long haul, particularly during stressful times.

With a little Irish luck hopefully those times will be few indeed.
