Set up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (2024)

For administrators who manage Chromebooks for a school.

As an admin, you can use your Google Admin console to deploy Minecraft: Education Edition to your managed users on Chromebooks. Then, users can learn, play, and collaborate using Minecraft: Education Edition.

Before you begin

  • You need a Minecraft: Education Edition license for each user that you want to deploy the app to. For information, check theMinecraft: Education Edition support website.
  • Users can sign in tothe Minecraft: Education Edition app in 3ways:
    • Users can sign in to their Chromebookwith their Google Account. Thenthey manually sign in to the app using their Microsoft account. To avoid needing to sign in every time, users cansave their Microsoft username and password in the Minecraft app.
    • Users can be automatically signed into the app on their Chromebookwith their Google Account if you use SAML Federation to link their Microsoftaccount(as service provider) to their Google Account(as identity provider).
    • Users can sign in to their Chromebookand the app with their Microsoft accountif you use SAML Federation to link their Google account(as service provider) to their Microsoft account(as identity provider).
  • Apps are deployed to users based on the organizational unit that they belong to. So, users can use approved apps, including Minecraft:Education Edition, if they sign in to Chromebooks that are not enrolled to your domain using their managed Google Account.
  • Don’t use Minecraft: Education Edition on devices that are configured to erase all local user info, settings, and state after each sign-out. In other words, devices that are in ephemeral mode.
  • We recommend that you use the Minecraft: Education Edition app on Chromebooks that have at least 4GB of memory and are assigned to a single student (vs. shared carts).
  • To make settings for a specific group of users or enrolled Chrome browsers, put the user accounts or browsers in a group or organizational unit. Only user accounts can be added to groups. For details, see Groups and Add an organizational unit.

Install Minecraft: Education Edition

Step 1: Ensure that managed Google Play is enabled

  1. Sign in to your GoogleAdminconsole.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to MenuSet up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (1)Set up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (2)Set up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (3)Apps.

  3. Click Additional Google services.
  4. (Optional) To apply the setting to a department or team, at the side, select an organizational unit. Show me how
  5. Confirm that Service Status for Managed Google Play is set to On.

Step 2: Enable Android apps

  1. Sign in to your GoogleAdminconsole.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to DevicesSet up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (5)Chrome.

  3. Click Apps & extensionsSet up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (6)Users & browsers.
  4. (Users only) To apply the setting to a group, do the following:
    1. Select Groups.
    2. Select the group to which you want to apply the setting.
  5. (Optional) To apply the setting to a department or team, at the side, select an organizational unit. Show me how
  6. On the far right, click Additional settings Set up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (8).
  7. For Android applications on ChromeOS devices, select Allow.
  8. (Optional) ForAndroid reporting for users and devices, select Enable Android reporting.
  9. Click Save.

Step 3: Install Minecraft: Education Edition

  1. Sign in to your GoogleAdminconsole.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to DevicesSet up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (9)Chrome.

  3. Click Apps & extensionsSet up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (10)Users & browsers.
  4. (Users only) To apply the setting to a group, do the following:
    1. Select Groups.
    2. Select the group to which you want to apply the setting.
  5. (Optional) To apply the setting to a department or team, at the side, select an organizational unit. Show me how
  6. Add the Minecraft: Education Edition app:
    1. Click AddSet up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (12)Set up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (13)Add from Google PlaySet up Minecraft: Education Edition on Chromebooks (14).
    2. Search for and click Minecraft: Education Edition.
    3. Click Select.
    4. Accept the Terms and Conditions to add the app.
  7. In the list of apps and extensions, find Minecraft: Education Edition.
  8. Under Installation policy, choose an option:
    • Allow install—Lets users install Minecraft: Education Edition. (recommended)
    • Force install—Installs Minecraft: Education Edition automatically and prevents users from removing it.
    • Force install + pin to ChromeOS taskbar—Installs Minecraft: Education Edition automatically and pins it to the taskbar.
  9. Click Save.

What to tell your users

For a better Minecraft: Education Edition experience...

  • Follow the guidelines on the Minecraft: Education Edition support page.
  • Make sure that your home or school has the internet connectivity and speed that you need to install and use the app.
  • Reduce the number of open tabs and apps to avoid spreading your CPU usage.

What are the minimum system requirements that are recommended for the Minecraft: Education Edition app?

The Minecraft: Education Edition app runs on all Chromebooks that support Android apps. Werecommend:

  • At least 4 GB of RAM
  • Hard Drive: Minimum of ~500 MB free per user on the device (1 GB recommended)
  • Chrome version 83 or later

Minecraft: Education Edition uses significant CPU resources, so we recommend that you do not keep other apps open while using it.

Fanless devices reach their thermal threshold faster than devices with a built-in fan. Excessive heat can affect your device’s CPU frequency and performance. Make sure that you use a fanless device on a hard surface and consider using a fan or ventilated stand. Which devices are recommended for the Minecraft: Education Edition app?

Fix Minecraft: Education Edition issues

Users can’t install the app

As an admin, you control which Android apps users can install on managed Chromebooks. Check to make sure that the Minecraft: Education Edition app is enabled and users' devices support Android apps.

Users have a problem with Minecraft’s functionality

Submit a support request to Minecraft support.

Users have limited controllersupport

Minecraft: Education Edition supports mouse, trackpad and touch input. It does not support controllers on any of its platforms.
