VICTORIAN SASH WINDOW GALLERY

VICTORIAN WINDOW ARCHITECTURE

As specialists in period, conservation and listed properties, our Victorian casem*nt and sash have been approved for listed and conservation properties by planning officers and architects throughout London and the South East.

Our single and double glazed Victorian sash windows are known for their authentic, slim section sizes and glazing bars, in keeping with the traditional style of Victorian architecture.

What period are sash windows?

Victorian windows have a greater variety of styles than Georgian windows, although sash windows, which were such a key part of Georgian architecture, remained popular in the Victorian era.

Sash windows first emerged in the Georgian era when neoclassical architecture started to emerge, and quickly became established as the defining style of the era. The Georgian architect prized uniformity and regularity, so sash windows, with their elegant proportions, symmetry and simplicity, were able to evoke the desired sense of order, balance and timelessness.

What do Victorian windows look like?

Because of the production of larger sheets of glass compared to the Georgian era, Victorian windows are characterised by larger individual panes with fewer glazing bars. From the 1850s onwards, large bay windows started to emerge. Sashes needed to be thicker and often feature horns to allow for the heavier panes of glass.

As more decorative styles became popular, Gothic casem*nt windows and sash windows became another key style of the Victorian era, with arched or curved tops, and delicate arched glazing bars or leading.

Although individuality was prized more by Victorian architects than uniformity and repetition, the timeless appeal of the sash window endured throughout this period, and remained popular throughout the following Edwardian period.

Our Sash Window Ranges

Timbawood offers three proven ranges of Victorian sash windows, depending on the requirements of the property. We can sensitively replicate your entire windows, or replace the sashes only, and fit them into the existing frames.
