A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (2024)

The Bulldogs added a number of interesting transfers ahead of the 2024 season.

While some college football teams have gone all in on the transfer portal, the Georgia Bulldogs continue to put great value in recruiting the high school ranks. That's not to say the Bulldogs don't see the value in adding multiple transfers, which was obvious from how they navigated the portal this offseason.

Georgia saw a significant bump in portal activity this offseason and are up to 11 transfer portal additions following last week's commitment by former Oregon defensive back Collin Gill. The Bulldogs not only added much-needed depth at several positions, but they also managed to sign veterans who could be starting by the time the season kicks off in late August.

Kirby Smart made it clear in past years that Georgia will sign a transfer when the situation is right, and it appears there were several such cases this offseason. Let's take a closer look at each of the 11 transfers Georgia added and get a sense for what they could contribute in 2024:

QUARTERBACK JADEN RASHADA

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (2)

Height: 6-4

Weight: 185

Hometown: Pittsburg, CA

Former school: Arizona State

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Summer

Recruiting rating: 4-star (transfer rating)

2023 stats: Completed 44 passes on 82 attempts for 485 yards with 4 TDs and 3 INTs; Rushed 14 times for 23 yards

Overview: Jaden Rashadawas the most discussed post-spring portal addition for Georgia, though that was largely due to his history with Florida. While the talk since then has mainly been about his lawsuit against parties that include Gators head coach Billy Napier, don't lose sight of the football ramifications of Rashada's decision to become a Dawg.

Rashada was one of the nation's top QB prospects in the 2023 cycle, and he showed flashes last fall. Injuries ruined his true freshman season very early on, but now he gets a chance to reset and learn behind one of the nation's top quarterbacks.

Rashada's decision to come to Georgia stands as a reset in his career and puts him in position to compete for the starting job in 2025. He is by no means a lock to be Carson Beck's heir apparent, which makes improving his game in 2024 such an important objective for his chances.

RUNNING BACK TREVOR ETIENNE

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (3)

Height: 5-9

Weight: 205

Hometown: Jennings, LA

Former school: Florida

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Winter

Recruiting rating: 4-star (transfer rating)

2023 stats: Took 131 carries for 753 yards and 8 TDs; Also caught 21 passes for 172 yards and 1 TD

Overview: Georgia lacked experience in its backfield after the 2023 season, but the Bulldogs changed that by landing Trevor Etienne. The younger brother of Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne, the younger Etienne showed flashes of being an All-SEC-caliber running back as he worked in tandem with fellow back Montrell Johnson.

Etienne immediately steps in as Georgia's lead back, and he showed his potential with a couple of impressive runs at G-Day. Although his status for the season opener against Clemson is up in the air due to a March arrest, he is positioned to touch the ball quite a bit this season.

WIDE RECEIVER COLBIE YOUNG

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (4)

Height: 6-3

Weight: 215

Hometown:Binghamton, NY

Former school: Miami

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Winter

Recruiting rating: 4-star (transfer rating)

2023 stats: 47 receptions for 563 yards and 5 TDs

Overview: Colbie Young was a big-bodied receiver who was very effective for the Hurricanes, and he hit the ground running in Athens. Young was one of the most talked-about players for Georgia during spring practice, and his ability for going up and getting the football drew nothing but praise.

Young was impressive during the spring game and continues to look like a potential starter at the X position for the Bulldogs. He has passed every test to this point in his time at Georgia, and I believe he's going to be one of Carson Beck's go-to targets in 2024.

WIDE RECEIVER LONDON HUMPHREYS

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (5)

Height: 6-2

Weight: 197

Hometown: Nashville, TN

Former school: Vanderbilt

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Winter (Dec.)

Recruiting rating: 4-star (transfer rating)

2023 stats: Caught 22 passes for 439 yards and 4 TDs; Took 1 carry for 5 yards

Overview: London Humphreys was very impressive as a freshman at Vanderbilt and delivered some big plays over the course of the season, including a 49-yard touchdown catch against Georgia on Oct. 14. The Bulldogs' coaches apparently liked what they saw that day, which led to Humphreys transferring to Georgia this offseason.

Humphreys was the only portal addition who got to Georgia for Orange Bowl practices, which allowed him to get a valuable head start. The amount of experience ahead of him makes me think that Humphreys won't be a starter this fall, but he'll be a regular in the rotation and will get his opportunities to make plays.

WIDE RECEIVER MICHAEL JACKSON III

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (6)

Height: 6-0

Weight: 209

Hometown: Las Vegas, NV

Former school: USC

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Winter

Recruiting rating: 3-star

2023 stats: Caught 17 passes for 146 yards and 1 TD in 9 games; Returned 5 punts for 25 yards

Overview: Georgia went all in on getting experienced receivers through the portal, and that included landed USC transfer Michael Jackson III. Jackson has contributed for the Trojans the past three seasons, and he's hoping for similar results as a Bulldog.

Jackson made plays both as a receiver and as a punt returner at USC, but he was repeatedly bogged down by injuries. He looked the part at G-Day in April, but he's going to have to work hard to separate himself from the pack in order to play a significant role this season.

TIGHT END BENJAMIN YUROSEK

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (7)

Height: 6-4

Weight: 242

Hometown: Bakersfield, CA

Former school: Stanford

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Summer

Recruiting rating: 4-star (transfer rating)

2023 stats: Caught 16 passes for 239 yards and 1 TD in 6 games

Overview: Georgia has huge shoes to fill at tight end with Brock Bowers off to the NFL, but the Bulldogs don't lack options for their attempt to do so. Not only does Georgia bring back spot starter Oscar Delp as well as promising sophom*ore Lawson Luckie, but the team added a pair of freshman tight ends along with a veteran in Benjamin Yurosek.

Yurosek is a proven tight end who is hoping to get his career back on track after his 2023 season was hindered by a shoulder injury. He's been plenty productive before, as he was an AP All-PAC 12 second team selection in 2022 and received first-team honors from Pro Football Focus the previous season.

Yurosek is one of the more intriguing summer arrivals given his experience and given the unknowns about how he'll fit into a tight room that is filled to the brim with talent. It may take an outstanding fall camp in order for him to start, but I believe he'll be very involved in this year's offense no matter what.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE XZAVIER MCLEOD

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (8)

Height: 6-4

Weight: 313

Hometown: Camden, SC

Former school: South Carolina

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Winter

Recruiting rating: 4-star (transfer rating)

2023 stats: 1 tackle and 1 INT in 4 games

Overview: Xzavier McLeod was on Georgia's radar when he was a high school recruit, but he ultimately signed with South Carolina. His stay in Columbia was a short one, and now he's set to make his mark at Georgia.

McLeod was impressive during his first few months in Athens and ended the spring on a high note with a great showing at G-Day. Georgia needs its interior defensive line to step up in 2024, and I think McLeod is capable of helping make that happen.

DEFENSIVE BACK JAKE POPE

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (9)

Height: 6-1

Weight: 205

Hometown: Buford, GA

Former school: Alabama

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Winter

Recruiting rating: 3-star (transfer rating)

2023 stats: Played in 12 games — mostly on special teams — but did not record any statistics; Had a team-high 10 tackles along with 1 sack and 2 pass break-ups at Alabama's spring game

Overview: It's not much of a surprise when you see a player follow a position coach from one school to another. That was the case with Jake Pope, who arrived at Georgia shortly after Travaris Robinson joined the Bulldogs' staff.

Pope didn't play much in his two seasons in Tuscaloosa, but he was a highly-regarded recruit out of Buford High School and immediately bolstered Georgia's secondary depth. He looked up for the challenge at G-Day, performing well and ending the afternoon with 4 tackles and a pass break-up.

Pope's arrival added another player to the mix in terms of Georgia's competition at safety and STAR. While I am not convinced he's in line to start at either position, he was a worthwhile addition for Georgia and will contribute in some form or fashion this fall.

DEFENSIVE BACK COLLIN GILL

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (10)

Height: 6-0

Weight: 215

Hometown: Washington, D.C.

Former school: Oregon

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Summer

Recruiting rating: 3-star (transfer rating)

2023 stats: Did not play

Overview: Presumably Georgia's final portal addition before the 2024 season, Collin Gill appeared set to head to Temple after his year at Oregon before the Bulldogs swooped in late and offered him a spot. Gill will try to make a name for himself after spending one season in Eugene, where he showed flashes in fall camp but ultimately never saw the field.

As I explained in Tuesday's breakdown, Gill is a low-risk addition for Georgia and stands as someone who, in time, could develop into a contributor. He'll likely add depth at the STAR position in the short term, and his four remaining years of eligibility open the door for him to develop with the help of Kirby Smart and company.

KICKER CHARLIE HAM

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (11)

Height: 6-2

Weight: 200

Hometown: Atlanta, GA

Former school: Duke

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Summer

Recruiting rating: 3-star

2023 stats: Averaged 62.02 yards per kickoff on 54 kickoffs; Touchbacks on 44.44% of kickoffs with 0 out of bounds and 0 onside attempts

Overview: Another special teams addition, Charlie Ham looks like a likely option to replace the outgoing Jared Zirkel (transferred to Texas A&M).

Ham had been the Blue Devils' placekicker for three seasons but only handled kickoff duties in 2023. His transfer to Georgia was not only a move closer to home for the Atlanta native, but it reunited him with former Duke special teams coordinator Kirk Benedict, who holds the same role with the Bulldogs.

It's possible that Ham could push Peyton Woodring for the placekicker role for Georgia, but that doesn't seem likely. My prediction is it'll be Ham handling kickoff duties for the Dawgs this fall.

LONG SNAPPER BEAU GARDNER

A closer look at Georgia’s 2024 transfer portal haul (12)

Height: 6-4

Weight: 245

Hometown: San Francisco, CA

Former school: UCLA

Winter/Summer Enrollee: Summer

Recruiting rating: 3-star

2023 stats: Played in all 13 games last season as the snapper for all kicks and punts

Overview: Georgia needed to fill the spot vacated by William Mote, so the Bulldogs turned to a Californiakid in Beau Gardner. Gardner worked his way into a bigger and bigger role while with the Bruins, going from not playing in 2020 and 2021 to appearing in three games in 2022 and handling all snapping duties in 2023.

Gardner will join Will Snellings and Jonathan Washburn as Georgia's options at long snapper this season. Given his experience, Gardner should be the favorite to pick up where Mote left off.
