What is the most popular green building certification? ›

LEED Green Building Certification (v4. 1) Managed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is one of the most well-known green building certifications in the world. Their highest level of certification, LEED Platinum, is a dream target for many architects and developers.

Zero Energy Certification™ is a standard developed by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI or the Institute) that recognizes the highest levels of energy performance that built projects can achieve.

All Living Building Challenge projects must be holistic—addressing aspects of all seven Petals through the Core Imperatives. The Living Building Challenge consists of seven performance categories, or “Petals”: Place, Water, Energy, Health + Happiness, Materials, Equity and Beauty.

Core certification is the entry point for AEC teams and owners to begin their journey toward fully regenerative building practices. With the accountability of a performance-based standard, Core also serves as the foundation for any project pursuing Petal or Living designation under the Living Building Challenge.

Living Future Accreditation (LFA) is the professional credential that recognizes and rewards proficiency in the world's most ambitious, advanced, and holistic regenerative design standards.

To earn this certification, a building must actually meet five requirements of the LBC: Limits of Growth, Net Zero Energy, Rights to Nature, Beauty and Spirit, and Inspiration and Education. According to the ILFI website, nearly any building can become NZEB-certified: new or operational, anywhere in the world.
