Pokémon stop leveling once they reach the cap, set by the player's regional amount of badges. Any Pokémon over this barrier will faint themselves in battle, however out of battle moves, like Cut or Fly are useable. Excess experience gained by the Pokémon is stored until it can level up again.

Level Caps by Story Progression

It increases gradually as the player earns more Gym badges. The maximum level cap in main game is level 100, and Pokemon cannot level up past this cap, even with Rare Candies.
