The Herald-Sun from Durham, North Carolina (2024)

I NOVEMBER 12, 2004 THE HERALD-SUN DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA PAGE B3 LOCAL United Way's Old Reliable Run will be Sunday Money raised will go to support Triangle projects BY EMILY FLEISCHAKER 419-6684 Money raised by the Triangle United Way's Old Reliable Run of 2004 will go to charity for the first time in the event's 21-year history. The annual run will take place Sunday in downtown Raleigh. It will feature a new 5K race, as well as the 10K Run, a 1- mile Fun Run and a 100-yard children's dash. In previous years, proceeds were used by the event's former sponsor, said Jill Cox, Triangle United Way's communications director. That has changed, Cox said.

"When a runner or walker reg- ceeds for registration will go directly to our Community Care Fund that goes to improve lives here in our community," she said. Anyone can register to run or volunteer beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday at the area on the 200 block of South McDowell Street. Registration also is available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday at the Clarion Hotel at 320 Hillsborough or today online at www.oldreliablerun.com. The Community Care Fund comprises donations given to the United Way that are not designated for a specific cause. That means the Triangle United Way is free to choose among the 83 agencies it works with, or choose a new community issue, i in putting the money to use. "Teams of volunteers look at issues like child care and home- What: The Old Reliable Run Where: 200 block of S. McDowell downtown Raleigh When: Registration opens at 11 a.m.

The one-mile race fee is $5 and the Kids Dash is $3. can most efficiently invest to achieve a result," Cox said.

Another benefit of the undesignated Community Care Fund is that United Way can monitor agencies' use of the money and evaluate results, which it cannot do when community donations are designated for a certain agency. Brian Leech of Durham, a mentor of two years through isters for an event, all the pro- lessness and think about how we Durham Companions, said he This newspaper is printed on at least recycled newsprint. Please keep the GO AND DO plans to take the boy he works with to the run. Leech and the Parkwood Elementary fifthgrader will participate in the 5K "I try to do things with more positive things like giving back to the community," he said. "I think actions speak louder than words and kids need to be good citizens." Leech said the boy has had school.

He said he tries to talk to the child about his behavior and keep him active, playing basketball, going to the movies and having dinner together. Durham Companions and other Triangle United Way organizations will have booths at an fair starting about noon, to agency so people attending the race can learn about United Way's work in the community. In addition to the fair, there will be food and drink vendors and children's activities. "Families who don't want to participate can just bring their kids out to just have a good time," Cox said. "We're hoping that we'll have at least 1,600 people participate." A thousand people already have registered for the 5K and 10K races, formerly sponsored by The News Observer of Raleigh.

But Cox said she could for the event because this is essentially Triangle United Way's first year handling the money. People who want to be involved without racing can register to volunteer to help with tasks such as handing out drinks to runners, she said. The races will also be timed, "for those interested in competitive racing." Winners will receive gift certificates provided by Dick's Sporting Goods, Cox said.
